Department of Psychiatry
Overview
The Department of Psychiatry at Patan Hospital was established in 2011, initially providing regular psychiatric outpatient services. Mental health services have been offered by general practitioners, Nepalese, and expatriate psychiatrists since the 1980s. The department expanded its services with the establishment of a six-bed psychiatry ward in 2013 and the introduction of psychology services in 2014. Postgraduate training commenced in 2018.

The department offers a comprehensive range of clinical services, including:
- Outpatient and inpatient care
- 24-hour emergency and consultation liaison services
- Psychology services
- Neuromodulation treatments (rTMS and ECT)
- Tele-consultation services
- 24-hour suicide helpline

- Geriatric Mental Health and Memory Clinic
- Headache Clinic
Additional Services
The department also provides mental health services through the One-Stop Crisis Management Centre (OCMC) for victims and perpetrators of gender-based violence.
Education and Training
The department is actively involved in the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, including dedicated community postings. It collaborates with the National Health Training Centre (NHTC), Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC), Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP), and various NGOs for capacity building of health professionals.
Research
Faculty members are engaged in numerous research projects at both national and international levels.
