Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

 

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Patan Hospital, established in 1982, aligns with PAHS’s mission to provide quality health services and promote academic excellence and social responsibility. The department comprises two units, focusing on service, education, and research.

Health Services

  • Out-patient services (OPD): Available on Sunday-Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, including general OPD (Antenatal, Postnatal, Family Planning, Gynecology clinics) and extended OPDs (Patan Private Clinic and Patan Private Practice). Specialty services cover Feto-maternal medicine, High-Risk pregnancies, Infertility, Oncology, Urogynecology, and Laparoscopy. The department serves around 250 patients daily.
  • In-Patient Services: General and private beds are available for obstetric and gynecological care.

Specialty Services

  • Feto Maternal Services: Offers both invasive and non-invasive services, including genetic counseling, prenatal testing, and various scans. Invasive procedures include Chorionic Villus Sampling, Amniocentesis, Amnioreduction, and Amnioinfusion.
  • Infertility Services: Provides pre-conception counseling and diagnostic/therapeutic services such as Semen Analysis, Hormonal Analysis, Hysterosalpingography, and Laparoscopy.
  • Gynecology Oncology Services: Offers screening, diagnostic, therapeutic, and prophylactic services for benign/malignant tumors. Procedures include PAP smear, VIA, VILI, colposcopy, biopsies, polypectomy, LEEP, conization, and various surgeries. Prophylactic services include genetic counseling and risk reduction surgeries.
  • Minimally Invasive and Laparoscopic Services: Includes diagnostic hysteroscopy, endometrial biopsy, laparoscopic hysterectomy, myomectomy, cystectomy, and surgeries for ectopic pregnancy.
  • High Risk Pregnancy Services: Available on all working days. Provides antenatal check-ups with close monitoring on an OPD basis. 18 beds are allocated for high-risk pregnancies. Continuous maternal and fetal monitoring during labor and delivery. Services include cardiotocography, epidural analgesia, vacuum/forceps delivery, and emergency cesarean section by experts.
  • Uro-Gynecology Services: OPD runs on all working days, offering outpatient/inpatient services. Includes pessary insertion for prolapse, anterior/posterior colporrhaphy, vaginal hysterectomy, sacrospinous fixation, Kelly’s plication, and fistula repair (Latzko procedure, partial colpocleisis).
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology Services: Provides patient and day care services including antenatal check-up/counseling, labor induction/augmentation, deliveries, marsupialization, suction/evacuation, total/subtotal abdominal hysterectomy, myomectomy, cystectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, surgeries for ectopic pregnancy, and medical management.
  • Family Planning Services: Offers services to couples motivated for family planning. Includes counseling, oral contraceptive pills, progesterone-only pills, copper T insertion/removal, Jadelle insertion/removal, IUCD insertion/removal, bilateral/interval tubal ligation, and vasectomy.
  • Birthing Centre: The only hospital in the country with a dedicated birthing center. Trained nursing staff provide counseling, yoga, and exercise sessions for uncomplicated deliveries. Post-delivery, mothers are educated on exclusive breastfeeding, proper techniques, care, nourishment, and hygiene. Iron tablets are provided at discharge as per government policies. All services are cost-effective and easily available.

Education

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is involved in medical training from undergraduate to postgraduate and subspecialty levels:

  • Undergraduate: MBBS
  • Post-graduate: The department runs an MD Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program. It also provides short-term rotational training to MD residents from other disciplines like MDGP.

Research: Several research activities are carried out in the department by the residents and the faculty.
