Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine

Since its inception in 1982, the Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine has been integral to Patan Hospital, initially functioning as an Emergency Room. As healthcare demands increased, the department expanded its services to include outpatient care through Male, Female, and Under-14 clinics. This growth reflected the rising importance of General Practice in healthcare. In collaboration with Institute of Medicine, the first ever residency program MDGP was started at Patan hospital in the year 1992. Besides, in collaboration with the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), the department launched the General Practice residency program in 2005. Both of this program was later handed over to respective institution from the inception of Patan Academy of Health sciences in the year 2008. The integration of general practice with emergency care has solidified the department’s role as a cornerstone of the hospital.

Since 2018, the department has embarked on a journey of academic excellence with the launch of its own postgraduate program. Anchored in the core values of competency-based education and aligned with the mission and vision of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS), the department is committed to delivering quality healthcare while continuously innovating its educational practices.
