Anesthesia Department

Early Days and International Contributions

Patan Hospital stands as a pioneering institution in the development of anesthesia services in Nepal. In its early days, the country faced a shortage of anesthesiologists, prompting doctors from various countries to visit Patan Mission Hospital (formerly Shanta Bhawan) every three months. These visiting doctors made substantial contributions to the Anesthesia Department, enabling the successful performance of complex surgeries such as thoracotomies, craniotomies, and nephrectomies.

Relocation and Continued Advancements

After relocating to Lagankhel in 1982, Patan Hospital continued to advance its anesthesia services. German doctors trained many anesthesia assistants through the Nick Simons Institute and provided training to nurse anesthetists who became integral to the department. During this period, the hospital relied on a single Boyle’s machine and used tools like precordial and esophageal stethoscopes and manual sphygmomanometers for patient monitoring.

Strengthening the Department

The integration of full-time anesthesiologists significantly strengthened the department. The arrival of new specialists in 2009 further bolstered the team, which also plays a crucial role in training MBBS students as part of the undergraduate program at Patan Academy of Health Sciences. In 2019, the initiation of the MD program under expert mentorship added a new dimension to medical education at Patan Hospital.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and NORA Services

The department also manages a five-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), emphasizing patient-centric care. Beyond traditional responsibilities, it provides Non-Operating Room Anesthesia (NORA) services for procedures like Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and interventional radiological interventions. This multifaceted approach reflects the department’s commitment to meeting diverse medical needs and contributing to the broader spectrum of healthcare services.

Continuous Evolution and Dedication

Today, the anesthesia department not only thrives but also extends its services to a Pain Clinic, showcasing its continuous evolution and dedication to healthcare. A cohesive team of ten dedicated anesthesiologists is at the forefront of ensuring patient well-being at Patan Hospital.
